The world has become more complex and uncertain, which highlights how vulnerable corporate supply chains can be. This means that many companies have to restructure their supply chain, while at the same time planning more scenario-based for a longer term than before. Digitization plays a crucial role here.

On May 24th, EyeOn hosted a planning networking event for shipbuilding companies at Croy Castle in the Netherlands.

More than nine well-known companies from the Dutch shipbuilding industry were engaged in the discussion around capacity and resource planning, and KPI’s, and dashboarding.

EyeOn presented their view on the current planning topics in a time of growing order books. Besides project planning at order level, the bigger planning framework with tactical multi-project planning and project based sales and operations planning were discussed to monitor the adherence to strategic goals.

Consultant Sander Hulsen conducted the participants into the subject of capacity and resource planning. Central topic here is to keep control over your engineering, operations and yard resources while having multiple projects running, in order to improve delivery reliability. Discussions amongst participants related to the different decisions to be taken, in applying capacity planning in the mid and long term, and resource planning in the short term.

Based on his experience, rapid application consultant Bram Kurstjens elaborated on the use and requirements of KPI’s in general and planning KPI’s in particular. For creating consensus about and having a meaningful set of KPI’s one should have access to a common and consistent data set, the single source of truth.

Key in creating a dashboard are the ‘what’, ‘when’ and ‘how’ to report the KPI’s. To come to an effective dashboard the visualized KPI’s should be complemented with clarifying comments and corrective or mitigative actions.

The feedback from the group of participants indicated that the knowledge sharing and networking were perceived as being very valuable.

This spring, at March 15th EyeOn also initiated the knowledge network for shipbuilding industry suppliers. The first-tier suppliers for the shipbuilding industry confirmed the increasing pressure on adequate planning to serve their customers with timely deliveries and good communication.

On March 15th EyeOn hosted the 1st round table ‘Project planning and control’ for shipbuilder suppliers. Main theme of the round table was getting to know colleagues in the business and share knowledge. Participating companies in this round table were Alewijnse, Bakker Sliedrecht, Eekels Technology, Huisman Equipment, RH Marine Group, and Wärtsilä. Between these participants, builders of complex cranes, large engines, and electrical installations, there were lively discussions which showed that there is much to be learned from each other. Participating companies showed both their knowledge and expertise as well as their vulnerability and challenges.

For example we discussed the role and responsibility of planning between the shipbuilder suppliers and the yard. According to the operations manager of an electrical installation company: “Planning has to be agreed on before contract, it is the only way to make the project a success!”.

During the round table two subjects were discussed in detail.

1. What are your best planning practices to get effective control over the project progress and make planning more action driven?

  • A planning is to make decisions.
  • Focus on interfaces, with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Different levels of the planning can be used for different decisions (horizons).
  • It is essential to talk about planning with the client before the contract is signed.
  • Delivering or not delivering on time is mainly dependent of the information supply of the client and other suppliers.
  • Make sure everyone speaks the same planning-language (clear definition of planning elements).
  • Try to be in the lead towards customers (yards) by presenting your own planning and process.
  • Progress meetings are used to make decisions and define actions. Make minutes to ensure proper follow-up.

2. Which reporting is used to monitor and steer the project on executive level as well as the operational level?

  • Reporting should only be done on exceptions (mainly for KPI’s).
  • S-curves are nice to use, yet always focus on the critical path and the story behind the figures.
  • Just start with creating your own resource planning based on available data, and improve it afterwards step by step.

We look back on a successful 1st round table. The enthusiasm of the participants, the open and informal atmosphere and willingness to share knowledge and learnings gives us the energy to facilitate the next round table, which will be organised later this year. Interested to join this session? Thursday the 30th of March 2017 EyeOn hosted the ‘Optimize your S&OP Performance’ event together with Anaplan at the Creative Valley at Papendorp.
The 20 participants enjoyed an inspiring agenda this afternoon:

  • How to configure for Success – by Freek Aertsen (EyeOn)
  • Why is Anaplan different? – by Martin Visser (Anaplan)
  • Anaplan in Action – by Joris Verhoeven (Anaplan)
  • Optimize S&OP Performance – by Klaas Jan van Roosmalen (Opple)

Freek Aertsen discussed the quality of decisions by the axis process-, information- and behavioral quality. Anaplan presented the flexibility of the platform by the ‘build from scratch’ demo. Klaas Jan van Roosmalen  of Opple explained the challenges as a start up (in Europe) and evolving from an Excel user to the more robust planning platform Anaplan and the added value the Anaplan implementation does bring Opple.

The afternoon proved to be very informative for the customers attending this event, like Akzo Nobel, ASML, Bol.com, Cargill, Dyson Heineken, Philips, KPN, Nike and others. During the drinks afterwards, a lot of interesting discussions originated between the participants and speakers.

Next event will be a combined effort between Anaplan, Tableau and EyeOn. This event will demonstrate that the new Cloud based solutions do support agile planning processes and reporting and analytics. Date to be confirmed (planning: June 2017). Please let us know if you are interested to join via academy@eyeon.nl.

If you have questions or want to receive additional information, please contact Jan Veerman (jan.veerman@eyeon.nl/ +31(0)6-51884701).
