On Tuesday September 7th we joined the kick-off of the ‘Verspillingsvrije Week’ organized by Stichting Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling.  And we also had an internal discussion on embracing sustainability at EyeOn.

Wednesday Julie Goossens, Damien Jaton, and Enrique De La Fuente hosted a webinar where they presented a customer case on preventing excess stock and obsolescence.

In another webinar on Friday Willem Gerbecks and André Vriens showed how food waste reduction and improving on-shelf performance can go hand-in-hand. After the webinar we launched a ‘Waste prevention benchmark’. Participation is easy and for free, just click this link.

To close off the week, our employees did their best to prepare a vegetarian meal with the least amount of waste. We must say, quite successfully. Here some pictures with the results!

Supply chain leaders discuss how to deal with volatile markets

This was one of the questions that a group of executives from FMCG, food and retail companies discussed on the EyeOn inspiration event in the ADAM tower in Amsterdam Wednesday 13th of November.

For many companies’ market circumstances are volatile, varying from global politics to individual consumers who can shift buying preferences ‘in a click’. Next to that data is everywhere, the war on talent is increasingly challenging and sustainability is driving major changes in how to be successful. Although many value chains are more transparent than ever before, this hasn’t made us better planners or decision makers (yet).

Luckily the possibility of next level planning and decision processes is available. Discussing the possibilities of no -touch planning with self-driving cars, the clear conclusion by all was that we need to improve 1-2 levels in the next few years.

Tooling and data are no limiting factors anymore. The group agreed that organisational readiness, cultural change and embracing the potential of analytics deserve the most attention in making the next steps.

The changing world of internet platforms is making clear that business models are changing and most likely will impact everybody not only in B2C but also in B2B, according to Maurice Jongerius from Bol.com. The consequences are not only technology driven but even more on the people side. Leaders and managers should start changing themselves!

Conclusion: Transformation thinking is key!

Overseeing Amsterdam, the conclusion was that transformation thinking is key!
5 best practices to start transforming tomorrow were shared by André Vriens & Jan Veerman:

  • Ask the right questions for your business!
  • Start collecting and storing data as of tomorrow
  • Build strong analytical skills and embed analytics in business processes
  • Collaborate with all relevant stakeholders in and outside your company
  • Remain agile, just start!

The 5th edition of the EyeOn international Planning Inspiration Day 2019, was once again an inspiring and thought-provoking event. More than 500 participants from 250 leading companies – as well as universities and application vendors—met to share their ideas on ‘no-touch’, where humans are increasingly out of the loop. It was the big trend in forecasting and planning highlighted at EyeOn PID 2019.

The knowledge and networking event was all about inspiring, innovating, and implementing. EyeOn senior business consultant Joost Rongen kicked it off noting how the Amsterdome, a future-proof, circular dome once dedicated to the aviation sector that represented new technology and horizons, was the perfect place to ‘discover together where the latest technology will bring us and what it means for us as human beings.’

Thank you all – participants, speakers, partners and planners and forecasters everywhere – for making the international Planning Inspiration Day 2019 such a success!

On June 18th EyeOn organized the network event “Capture the value out of APS advanced planning systems” and welcomed a group of companies from different industries.

The APS advanced planning systems landscape is changing

We started by giving an overview on the current APS landscape an trends. Bram Bongaerts shared the APS journey of Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, who implemented OMP+ at for their global supply chain. This was followed by an interactive discussion between the participants on their current challenges with regards to their planning systems.

APS 2.0

The event ended with the short pitches of a couple new vendors of advanced planning systems on how they distinguish from traditional systems. A commonality between all of them is that their systems are characterized by the fact that it is open and can be connected to many other tools and data sources. The tool reflects the digital supply chain and the system is built around the planner instead of vice versa.

Key insights from the day

  1. The APS advanced planning systems landscape has changed a lot over the last 10 to 15 years. Especially due to increased technological capabilities more and more tools perform better. However, that does not mean that every tool in the ‘leader’ quadrant is fit for purpose as it really depends on the functional scope.
  2. The best tool is not always the one that includes all functional areas. It is a cost trade-off to choose one integrated system versus choosing the best fit-for-purpose solution per process (demand planning, supply planning, S&OP).
  3. Use the business alongside the design phase of an advance planning system in order to trace back all logical steps taken. Start with cleaning your master data right now before implementing a new process and tool in parallel.
  4. Don’t focus only on the planning tool, the planner that uses the tool should be the decisive factor. Different APS tools require a different level of planner expertise.

On May 16th, EyeOn hosted a network event on ‘No-touch S&OP, what happens in practice’ in the Netherlands.

We presented practical and inspiration topics to the 30 participants to help bring their supply chains closer towards no-touch S&OP.

EyeOn no-touch S&OP framework

Over the past years, technological developments have created a big opportunity for companies to improve their S&OP planning processes. By taking advantage of these opportunities, some enterprises are already moving towards the goal of no-touch S&OP. EyeOn’s vision is that no-touch S&OP cannot just be achieved through technological development, but different building blocks that encompass integral processes across the value chain, excellent data, enabling applications, high quality analytics, organizational readiness, and a decision focused culture are necessary to reach the no-touch S&OP.

No-touch via fast planning tools

Tata Steel shared its journey using technology to improve their S&OP process. The attendees learned from the challenges and benefits that Tata Steel experienced in their implementation of a fast planning tool to move their S&OP process towards a more automated cadence.

Inspiration sessions

These sessions provided examples for the attendees about the S&OP improvements in different areas that are needed to reach no-touch S&OP. The topics included:

  • No-touch data based on data engineering
  • Narrow no-touch versus strong no-touch
  • No-touch people and organization

Key insights from the day

  1. Although it is coined ‘no-touch’ it makes sense to prepare your organization. Many small steps in different areas make a big difference.
  2. Algorithms are demanding and need to be fueled by (a lot of) high quality data. Start collecting or improving your data quality as soon as possible.
  3. Start the change by implementing supply chain visibility and transparency, next move into building a future-proof digitally enabled supply chain through implementations and pilots to demonstrate the success of advanced planning.

Change is the only constant. How we react to these changes sets the leaders apart! Things of which we thought were impossible, are coming into our day-to-day life. Only a decade ago the belief was held that self-driving cars, automated speech recognition, instantaneous translation and advanced robots were the domain of Hollywood movies. Reality has proven different!

What about no-touch planning? Is this fiction or is it approaching us at high speed?

During the International Planning Inspiration Day 2019 over 300 participants from leading companies, universities, and application vendors will meet and share latest trends and developments in forecasting and planning. Join this event and judge yourself at the end of the day, based on real cases and projects, to what extend automation will be driving your planning processes.

The program of the biggest forecasting and planning event in Europe will include over 30 presentations and workshops, from visionary expert views, to practical cases of projects recently executed by leading companies. We offer a unique opportunity to meet over 300 experts in the field.

On March 13th, EyeOn hosted an expert workshop on “No-touch planning: the new reality?” prior to the Marcus Evans conference on ‘Advancing S&OP to integrated business planning’ in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Technology has greatly improved availability of data. This data hold the potential of better, faster, and more efficient decision making. Turning the available data into better insights for decision making is not straightforward and requires a completely different mindset and capabilities than continuous improvements within a more traditional planning process and toolkit.

Moving towards no-touch planning requires actions in different fields. In the workshop we elaborated on the different building blocks and preconditions to grab the benefits, such as connected processes, a data driven culture, and the excellence of data.

Key insights from the workshop:

  • No-touch planning is expected to become reality in 2-5 years from now
  • Most relevant building blocks to grab the benefits of no-touch planning:
    • build the analytics organization
    • understand humans and adapt apps
    • develop fact based collaboration and communication
  • Main challenges to make it happen:
    • change management
    • company culture
    • innovation budget

On February 21st, EyeOn hosted the network event on ‘Building the data driven supply chain’ in Antwerp, Belgium. Around 30 participants were introduced to selected key elements for successful application of data science to planning and forecasting.

Transition to the data driven supply chain

For most larger companies, technology has greatly improved availability of data. This data holds the potential of better, faster, and more efficient decision making. Turning the available data into better insights for decision making is not straightforward and requires a completely different mindset and capabilities than continuous improvements within a more traditional planning process and toolkit.

A key driver for success is the centralization of analytical skills in a team where subject-matter experts, data ninjas, project managers, and operational specialist work together. The tools these teams use, should support continuous innovation, collaboration, and easy integration with data sources. These tools should have an open architecture and have the ability to tap into the latest open source technologies.

How digitalization will change your company

More companies want to go to a ‘no-touch S&OP process’. Within forecasting we already see a level of autonomy. But is this autonomy possible in every part of the planning process and do people want to have an autonomous decision making process? Moving towards no-touch S&OP requires actions in different fields. You need a number of building blocks to get there, such as the organizational readiness and excellent data.

Innovative data science applications in forecasting, inventory, and supply management

We saw some real case examples of how data science has made its entrance to the domain of forecasting and planning in the following topics:

  • Forecast value add
  • Supply chain optimization using apps
  • Production wheel

Key insights from the day

  1. Start collecting and storing data as of tomorrow
  2. Build strong analytical skills – often centrally organized
  3. Do not make analytics a stand-alone exercise – embed in process
  4. Develop fact-based collaboration & communication – planner as orchestrator
